Registering to Work
Select the "sign-in" link in the upper right corner of the Worker website. You will be asked to provide your name, email address and password. In addition, you will be asked to agree to the Mechanical Turk Participation Agreement and provide your country of residence. Our customer care team will review your account. The review process typically takes less than 48 hours. We will send you an email when the review of your account is complete.
Working HITs

From the Mechanical Turk homepage, click on the "View a HIT in this group" link to see a specific HIT. Preview the HIT before you decide to accept it. If you want to complete the HIT, select the gold "Accept HIT" button. Complete the HIT according to the Requester instructions, and select the "Submit HIT" button. After you submit your results for the HIT, another similar HIT will be presented for you to accept.

A Requester may reject your work if they believe the answer is wrong, the HIT was not completed correctly or that the instructions were not followed. If you believe that your work was rejected in error, you may decide to contact the Requester directly.

Requesters can specify a HIT's "Allotted Time" or how long a Worker can hold on to a HIT. Once the Worker accepts the HIT, a timer begins counting up to the HIT's allotted time. This timer is visible to the Worker on the Worker web site. When the timer reaches the HIT's allotted time, the HIT is made available for other Workers to accept and work on. This ensures that work is completed in a reasonable time period.

If you see a HIT that violates the Amazon Mechanical Turk Participation Agreement including the Amazon Mechanical Turk Policies, you can report the HIT by clicking on "violates the Amazon Mechanical Turk Policies" link. Reported HITs will be investigated by Amazon Mechanical Turk staff.

For example, a HIT that asks Workers for any personally identifiable information including name and email address violates the Participation Agreement.

Amazon Mechanical Turk limits the number of HITs Workers can do on a daily basis based on a number of factors including your past performance and account status. To make sure you can do as many HITs as you want, continue to do good work for all Requesters.

Masters are elite groups of Workers who have demonstrated accuracy on specific types of HITs on the Mechanical Turk marketplace. Workers achieve a Masters distinction by consistently completing HITs of a certain type with a high degree of accuracy across a variety of Requesters. Masters must continue to pass our statistical monitoring to remain Mechanical Turk Masters.

Masters receive special perks including:

  • Exclusive access to work that requires a Master Qualification
  • Access to a private forum available only to Masters

Please note that Workers cannot apply for this status - it is a performance based distinction. The best thing a Worker can do to become a Master is to submit Assignments with accurate results across a wide variety of Requesters on the Mechanical Turk marketplace.

Getting Paid

When a Requester approves a HIT that you've submitted, Amazon Mechanical Turk automatically transfers money from the Requester's Prepaid HIT balance to your Amazon Payments account. If you are a new Worker, there is an initial holding period before your money is transferred to your Amazon Payments account. This holding period is an important security requirement and you will not be able to disburse funds during this time. Your money is held until you have been active on Mechanical Turk for 10 days.

If you are a US based Worker, you can choose to disburse your earnings to your U.S. bank account or to an Amazon.com gift certificate balance. Workers in India have the option of receiving bank checks denominated in Indian Rupees or disbursing their earnings to an Amazon.com gift certificate. All other international Workers can only disburse to an Amazon.com gift certificate. Please note that all disbursements are made in whole cents only.

Select the "Account Settings" link from the Mechanical Turk web site. Choose the "Transfer your earnings to your bank account or to your Amazon.com gift certificate balance" option and enter your password when prompted.

If this is the first time you have transferred money to a bank account, you will need to enter your bank account information. Follow the instructions to enter your bank routing and account numbers in the form provided.

A bonus is an additional grant of money from a Requester. A Requester can choose to pay a bonus in addition to the stated reward for completing a HIT. Bonuses are granted at the Requester's discretion and are usually paid to Workers who do particularly good work.

If you are a Worker in India, you can elect to receive a check for your earnings in Indian Rupees. You will need to provide your birth date, passport number, Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC) number or Permanent Account Number (PAN). A scanned copy of your passport, EPIC or PAN card is also required. All the information you need to sign up to receive payments denominated in Rupees is provided on the Account Settings page.

It takes 14 days to verify your card information once it is submitted. Once we've verified your information, you'll be able to withdraw your earnings in Indian Rupees. To request a withdrawal, go to the Account Settings page and follow the instructions. Your check is mailed within 6 weeks to the address we have on file.

US Resident Tax Information

You may provide either a social security number (SSN) or an individual tax identification number (ITIN). If you are a US-based Worker and you do not have one of these tax identifiers, you will not be able to continue to work on Mechanical Turk.

You can visit the Social Security Administration website (www.ssa.gov) to see if you are eligible and apply for a SSN.

If you are a US-based Worker, you will be prompted for your tax information when you reach a set lifetime total earnings. If you do not provide the required information, you will not be able to continue working on Mechanical Turk.

Mechanical Turk makes an effort to verify tax information. Your tax status is set to fail if the IRS tax identification service indicates that your tax name and your tax identification number do not match. You may re-enter your information, but you will not be able to accept more HITs until your information is approved. This may take up to 5 business days to verify your tax information.

Please refer to the IRS website or consult your tax professional.

Amazon Mechanical Turk treats your information with care. We protect the security of your information by using Secure Socket Layer (SSL) software, which encrypts the information. This information is stored encrypted in a database behind multiple firewalls. The information is only provided to Requesters who have provided an EIN and for whom you have exceeded the IRS tax reporting threshold.

Non-US Resident Tax Information

Requesters are required to collect tax information from all foreign Workers who work on their HITs. The information we are asking for is the same information you would provide in an IRS W-8BEN form. Please refer to the IRS website for more details: www.irs.gov.

No, you will not be allowed to work on Mechanical Turk until you have provided your name, address, and certified the required information in this form.
Unfortunately, US citizens living outside the United States are not allowed to work on Mechanical Turk.
Please consult your country's tax authority.
